Tilda’s Small Hill
Beside a mossy slope, a snail watches the survey. Her warm brown shell is almost hidden by a fern. “Tilda,” she says when Lulu introduces them. “I know that hill. It looks smaller when you have legs.” Pip sits down to look from her height.
The slope is not dangerous, but its loose surface slips each time Tilda tries it. Runa offers to call encouragement from the top. Tilda thanks her and stays where she is. Encouragement will not make the ground firmer. Lulu puts her map down before offering an answer.
Two ways forward
They examine the slope together. A longer route curves around its edge. Across the middle, broad bark pieces could make a steadier surface with a resting place. Both would reach the same clearing. Neither would require Tilda to become a different sort of visitor. Tilda stops beside the root while the friends consider the slope. Which one should they try with Tilda, while the ground is dry and there is plenty of time to change their minds?
Try the longer gentle bend
Tilda takes a long look at a very short rise. “Mountains come in several sizes,” she says. Lulu puts away the hurried answer she was about to give. Pip quietly sits down to wait. They follow the edge of the slope. Tilda reaches the top without slipping and chooses a shady pause beside a root. Lulu draws the gentle bend clearly. A longer line has become a useful way.
A good place to stop
Tilda rests beside the root after the successful trial. Pip waits with her. The hill is still a hill, but it no longer decides who belongs on the path.
