The Shelf Nobody Could Reach
Ivo returns a borrowed piece and finds its shelf above his head. Nori has rearranged the room to make the tall pieces look tidy. Bruno can reach everything, so the arrangement passed its first test. It has not yet passed Ivo’s. He puts the piece safely on the low table instead.
Fina asks Nori to try the return while standing where Ivo stands. Nori lowers himself and immediately loses sight of the label. The difficulty is not a visitor who has failed to understand the shelf. It is a shelf whose important information has moved out of view.
Two ways forward
They bring the ordinary returns down and leave the uncommon long pieces above, with a clear way to ask for help. Bruno does not have to lift every visitor. Ivo does not have to announce that he is small each time. Nori keeps the tall arrangement in a drawing, so the useful idea is not lost when the room changes. Bruno checks the place from the height of the smallest visitor. Which arrangement will help someone return an object independently when the friends are busy elsewhere in the room?
Use one low return tray
Ivo reaches up, then stops before stretching too far. Nori notices the pause rather than declaring the shelf nearly reachable. Bruno sets his basket down low. A useful place should not begin with a daily climbing problem. They place a clear return tray where every visitor can reach it. Ivo leaves his piece and marks its return. Bruno will sort the tray at a set time, keeping the borrowing spaces from becoming a new heap.
A good place to stop
Ivo returns the piece without a climb. The shelf no longer needs a tall visitor to explain it. Bruno leaves the low place clear and takes a pleased look from the doorway.
