The Room with Nothing in It
Nori discovers the little root room because his leaf mantle catches on its door. He turns to free it and sees a dry space beneath the great tree. There are empty shelves, a low work surface and a window looking straight into ordinary moss. “We could fill this,” he says.
Bruno arrives with his basket and agrees immediately. Fina steps inside before answering. She notices a clear patch where somebody could turn around, a strip of light on the floor and a shelf that can be reached without stretching. The room contains useful spaces, even before it contains useful things.
Two ways forward
On the inside of the door is an old picture of two twig hands passing a small object between them. Nobody can read every faded mark, but the idea is clear enough to ask about. The room was meant to help things find another use, not only another place to wait. Should their new room begin with a small shelf of things to borrow, or a clear table where someone can make or mend?
Begin with a borrowing shelf
Nori’s stem catches the edge of a hanging leaf. He backs out with great dignity, followed by a small shower of dust. Bruno smiles. The room is already finding things to say about their first ideas. They choose one low shelf and place only three useful pieces on it. Fina leaves room between them; Bruno keeps the basket beside his feet. Nori draws a simple borrowing sign. The room begins by helping an object reach somebody else.
A good place to stop
The empty room has its first clear purpose. Bruno sets his basket beside the door. Nori looks at the space that remains, already curious about what the friends might do there.
