A Name That Leaves the Door Open
Halfway through their month, Nori makes a grand sign: The House of Useful Things. He carries it to the door with both arms. Bruno smiles at the name. Ivo asks a careful question. “What if somebody comes with nothing useful to bring?” The sign suddenly feels heavier.
Fina remembers how much help began with noticing a line, asking a question or waiting while someone tried. Mira thinks about the knot she did not tie. Useful things are only part of what the room holds. Useful time and useful company do not fit neatly on a shelf.
Two ways forward
Nori sets the sign down rather than hanging it before the question is answered. They keep the name, which describes their shared project, and decide to make its welcome clearer. A visitor does not have to own a splendid object to belong here. An empty-handed arrival may still have a real reason to come. How should the House of Useful Things explain that the door is open to more than things?
Add a picture of different ways to join
Nori tries saying the name in a grand voice. The root room makes it sound wonderfully round. Then Bruno says it as if asking a neighbour in for a look. The smaller voice fits through the doorway better. Fina draws a visitor borrowing, another trying and another asking a question. Nori places the picture below the name, where it can be seen from low down. The sign now offers possibilities rather than an entrance requirement.
A good place to stop
The room has a name that leaves its door open to more than objects. Bruno says it once again. Nori is pleased that a house of useful things can contain a useful question too.
