Fina’s Quiet Line
Nori makes a row of shelf labels. He has drawn a large shape for long things and a round shape for small things. Bruno begins sorting. A short flat piece fits both ideas, and a long curling leaf fits neither. Fina traces a little line in the dust with one twig foot.
Nobody notices at first. Nori is explaining his shapes again, louder, as though the bark pieces will understand better. Fina looks at her line and almost rubs it away. Then she asks Bruno to put his piece on it. The flat bark slides comfortably into the space she has marked.
Two ways forward
Her idea is not another grand set of rules. It is room to see the object from more than one side. They can group by what something is made of, or by the job it can help with. Either way, a piece needs enough space to be recognised without lifting a whole pile. The shelf needs a clear plan, not another large pile. Which way of finding things will they try on their first shelf: clear material families or a few pictures of possible jobs?
Group by material
Fina’s twig finger pauses above the line she has drawn. Nori waits long enough to notice what it connects. It is a small line with a large job, and it needs no grand announcement to do it. They give bark, twigs and leaves separate clear places. Fina draws small material signs. Bruno tests returning a piece without being told where. The room can now answer a simple question: what sort of thing is this?
A good place to stop
Fina leaves the clear line where the friends can use it. Nori follows it once more. The shelf makes more sense now, and so does listening before drawing another plan.
