The Piece Bruno Wanted Back
Bruno sees a beautiful little shape on the gift shelf. It is one he gave away yesterday, and today he has thought of a splendid use for it. He picks it up, then stops with his hand still close to the shelf. Nori notices the hesitation before he notices the shape.
The piece has not been taken yet, but the promise matters. Bruno had called it a gift. Now he would like it for his own new idea. Fina does not accuse him of being selfish. She asks whether he wants to change an agreement openly or pretend the original offer never happened.
Two ways forward
Bruno puts the piece down so they can talk without hiding the decision inside his basket. Nori finds a second, less elegant offcut that might do the job. It is not exactly the same, and that makes the question more interesting. A generous room does not mean nobody ever wants something back. Fina leaves room for an honest agreement about the piece. Which honest arrangement will he choose?
Keep the gift and try another piece
Bruno turns his basket handle between his twig fingers. The new idea is exciting, and the old promise is real. Nori waits. It is possible to want something without having to snatch it before the wanting has been discussed. Bruno leaves the original shape on the gift shelf. Nori holds the less elegant offcut while they compare its useful edge. The new idea changes a little, and Bruno finds he can keep his promise without giving up making something for himself.
A good place to stop
The piece has an honest agreement again. Bruno’s new idea can wait beside it without becoming a secret. Fina gives him time to enjoy wanting something and still keeping his word.
