Ivo’s Careful Question
A small acorn stands at the doorway, his natural cup settled firmly on top. “I’m Ivo,” he says. “If I borrow something, how will you know it is coming back?” Nori points at the room as though its new shelves are the answer. Ivo waits for a different sort of explanation.
Bruno offers to remember every object. Fina looks at the basket, then at the room. They do not yet have many things, but one day Bruno may be elsewhere. A system that works only inside one friend’s memory will be difficult for a new visitor to use.
Two ways forward
Ivo shows them two little marks on a bark chip. One means a thing has gone out. The other means it has returned. He likes clear promises. Nori worries that borrowing will now require a speech longer than the visit. Fina suggests trying one ordinary exchange before writing rules for everybody forever. Which method should their first careful neighbour help them try?
Keep a small return record
Ivo rests his acorn cap against the doorpost while he thinks. It makes a tiny knock. Nori starts to answer the knock, then realises Ivo is still asking his first question. They all begin again, a little more slowly. Ivo marks one simple loan and leaves space for its return. Bruno checks that somebody else can read the signs too. When the strip comes back, Nori adds the second mark himself. A record has helped without becoming a gatekeeper.
A good place to stop
Ivo can find an answer beside the borrowed piece. Bruno puts the basket down. Their new neighbour is welcome to ask again; the room is better for his careful question.
