The Sleeping Lantern
Behind the fern beside Lulu’s yellow door, Pip finds an acorn-cap lamp lying on its side. A thin path leads away from it. He nudges the lamp upright with his nose. Nothing lights. “Perhaps it is having a very long morning,” he says.
Lulu brushes loose leaves from the base. Beneath them is a small wooden picture: four little lights leading to a circle of seats. The picture is faded, but the empty space in the circle is clear. “A place for visitors,” she says. “I wonder why nobody comes.”
Two ways forward
They follow the first few steps. A root rises across the path. The next lamp points into a bush. From Pip’s height, the way looks quite different from Lulu’s view. She had already imagined a lovely evening walk. Now she notices that reaching it might be the first adventure. A flat stone and hollow bark wait beside the entrance. Which should welcome the first visitor?
Make a stone marker
A fern-tip brushes Pip’s scarf. He ducks, then peeps out again with a green moustache of shadow. Lulu laughs, and the forgotten path suddenly feels less lonely. Someone is looking at it together. They lay three pale pebbles around the flat stone. Pip can recognise the entrance without looking up. Lulu adds the first mark to their new trail sketch. The path now has a beginning.
A good place to stop
The lamp still needs work, but the path has a beginning. Pip looks at the stone and then at Lulu. This is somewhere they can begin together.

Can my child practise reading German?
Every book has English and German text. Switch languages, use English help, listen to German narration and replay individual words. Choose “Learning / new language” for simpler personal stories.
How long are the stories?
Daily-world episodes have an estimated five-minute reading length. In the separate personal story maker, choose 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes. Read and listen at your own pace.
Are the stories free?
Public books are free to read. Personal story creation and new natural narration are currently a limited free beta, subject to a shared monthly allowance. Prepared books remain readable when that allowance rests.
Are personal stories private?
Personal books are private by default. A parent can create an unlisted link, which expires after 90 days and can be switched off earlier. Never include sensitive details in a story.
Does this work on a phone or a computer?
Yes. Mary’s Fairyland Stories is designed for a web browser, with a spacious computer layout and touch-friendly reading on phones and tablets.
How are the stories made?
AI creates the text, illustrations and natural narration. Automated checks review language, age suitability and pictures. AI can make mistakes, so reading together is encouraged.
